Hitman Sniper Mobile: The Shadows - Meet the New Team of Deadly Snipers



Hitman: Sniper (commonly abbreviated to "Sniper") is a mobile game published and developed by Square Enix Montreal, and is their second Hitman mobile game after Hitman GO. Sniper was originally released on the iOS App Store on October 2nd, 2014, and was removed from it somewhere before January 17th.

The game received "generally favorable" reviews, according to video game review aggregator Metacritic. Gamezebo named the title among the best mobile games released in June 2015. Reviewers praised the cleverness and minimalism of its puzzle design, but wanted more variety from its activity-dense scenarios. They noted how they came to know the characters intimately after memorizing each character's routes and remembering how they respond to different kinds of coaxing. This predictability felt great, the TouchArcade reviewer wrote, when he could instinctively respond to new combinations of targets, but as a trade-off, the game mechanics quickly became repetitive. The Gamezebo reviewer felt otherwise, and commended how the game's setting, despite its consistency, remained fresh and exciting as new targets and complications were added. Pocket Gamer's reviewer found the game's alternative methods for killing targets through "traps and tricks" to be the game's most interesting element.


Hitman: Sniper is a 2015 mobile shooting gallery video game in the Hitman series by Square Enix Montréal. As the series' mainstay protagonist Agent 47, the player looks through a first-person sniper scope vision on their touchscreen device to assassinate several powerful figures who have assembled at a lakeside compound without alerting their associates. The player uses the environment to find creative ways to kill these targets, sometimes prompted by secondary objectives. Through mission progression, the player unlocks more powerful weapons and new weapon abilities.


As Agent 47, the standard hitman protagonist of the Hitman series, the player is led to assassinate several powerful figures who have assembled at three upscale, lakefront houses in Montenegro.

This shooting gallery game is played through first-person vision of a sniper scope, such that Agent 47 is not vulnerable to counterattack but can fail the mission if the targets notice the scheme and leave the premises. The game becomes a puzzle of isolating targets such that others nearby will not be alerted and, in turn, alert others at the compound. The player experiments with alternative methods for killing the targets, such as shooting out glass and letting targets fall to their deaths rather than killing them directly.[2] Other traps include setting off car alarms to distract guards, turning on fans to knock enemies off cliffs, and letting a target fall directly into a jacuzzi. The player pinches the device's touchscreen to zoom in with the rifle's scope and taps its reticle to fire. An on-screen "reload" button begins a quick time event in which the player swipes the screen to reload the weapon.[3]

After the excellent surprise of Hitman Go earlier this year, that studio is now working on Hitman: Sniper. Like Hitman Go, Sniper reimagines the series' contract killings in a form that fits better on mobile and tablet devices. But this time it's far less abstracted, but it still completely works.


Players will also be pushed back into levels to try out a constant series of unlocks and upgrades. After a successful mission, the game plays a roulette mini-game to award players with parts, which can then be used to assemble new weapons. Each weapon levels up individual and unlocks abilities. The sniper rifle I used had supersonic rounds that would create noise and draw guards to an area as well as a rapid fire ability that allowed me to shoot several bullets in quick succession.


As much as I'm wary of the microtransactions and the push to make a well-known console and PC franchise working on mobile and tablets, I walked away from E3 impressed with Hitman: Sniper. I'm looking forward to playing it more when it arrives on iOS this fall.


However, it was only renamed to Onoma last month, which makes the studio closure seem all the more puzzling. Onoma is best known for its mobile games of popular franchises like Deus Ex and Tomb Raider, which spawned titles such as Deus Ex Go and Lara Croft Go, the former of which is shutting down in January.


The Square Enix Development Company are a little like Will Smith in movies. They make a few stinkers, and then unexpectedly make something that is a world-beater, and Hitman Sniper is one of them. Square are the developers of the Final Fantasy games and the Hitman games, and this mobile game is a smash hit.


It has a Hitman game feel about it, but it is a sniper game. But, it is a sniper game with a difference. It is not just a shooting game; it requires planning, skill, luck, focus and perception.


You will need a powerful mobile device, and you will need patience to both win the game, and to get through the loading screens. Other than those minor flaws, this is a fantastic game and well worth the tiny amount that Square Enix is charging for it. This is not a Freemium game full of adverts and mandatory in-game purchases, this is a mobile sniper game that has a big dose of the Hitman game mechanics, and that is just perfect for anybody wanting more than a mindless shooter. Hitman Sniper only has 17 targets, but you will have a great time taking them out.


Hitman Sniper: The Shadows makes an effort to bring the essence of Hitman to mobile, but falls short of delivering the same level of immersion, mayhem, and satisfaction that amassed such a cult following for the mainline games.


There's no Agent 47 to be found here, but the allure of that special Hitman sauce in the palm of my hand was too much to ignore. Of course, whenever you try to bring a longstanding console/PC series to mobile, there are going to be some major hurdles to clear.


Remaining in "the shadows" truly is the key to succeeding in most missions. If enemies catch on to the fact that a sniper is gunning down their teammates, they'll sound the alarm and start shooting at you. Your Agent sits tight in the eagle's nest even while taking hits, so if you fail to eliminate your assailants in time, they'll kill you and you'll fail the mission.


A brand new Hitman game has been revealed. The well-received Hitman 3 was just released in January and was published and developed by IO Interactive. This fresh Hitman title is being worked on by Square Enix Montreal for mobile.


Square Enix Montreal is the team behind Hitman GO and Lara Craft GO, tactical puzzle games that started on mobile devices. But this new Hitman mobile game looks like it could be something else entirely.


This particular Quebec studio has a history of pumping out well-received mobile games. Hitman Go, Lara Croft Go, and Deus Ex Go knew the scaled back format of the platform and made it work with intuitive controls and clever puzzle design. Hitman Go, in particular, was the winner of Best iOS Game at the Canadian Video Game Awards (the nominees for 2020's Canadian Game of the Year were just announced the other day).


In a statement shared to Twitter earlier today, the studio announced the shuttering of four mobile titles: Arena Battle Champions, Deus Ex Go, Hitman Sniper: The Shadows, and Space Invaders: Hidden Heroes. Not only are they being removed from their respective storefronts on December 1, but they won't even be playable at all after January 4. You also can't buy anything in those games anymore and any existing purchases you have won't be refunded, so be sure to use 'em up in the next few weeks.

At this year's E3, Square Enix has announced the follow-up to its successful casual mobile game Hitman: Sniper. It's called Hitman Sniper: The Shadows, and this time around, Agent 47 has gone missing, which means you'll have your pick from five brand new characters tasked with saving Agent 47. Unlike the original, Hitman Sniper: The Shadows will be free-to-play. It's slated for release on Android and iOS sometime later this year.
